Finance Minister Introduces Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, Grants Free Solar Electricity to One Crore Households

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled a rooftop solar panel scheme targeting one crore households, offering 300 units of complimentary electricity under the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana. This initiative is expected to yield annual savings ranging from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 18,000 for participating households. As per the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the Finance Minister emphasised that through rooftop solarisation, one crore households stand to benefit from up to 300 units of free electricity each month. This initiative resonates with the Prime Minister's vision, articulated on the historic occasion of the Ram Mandir consecration in Ayodhya.

Anticipated benefits include significant annual savings for households, electric vehicle charging opportunities, entrepreneurship avenues for solar panel vendors, and employment prospects for skilled youth in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance. The Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana aims to facilitate solar rooftop installations in households while incentivising surplus electricity generation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this initiative on 22 January 2024, alongside a call for a nationwide campaign to promote residential rooftop solar adoption.

The January billing cycle too see a 37-paisa decrease in Bescom electricity prices per unit

Consumers of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) are set to enjoy a pleasant start to the year as the January billing cycle will see a reduction of 37 paise per unit in electricity bills. This decrease is attributed to the Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) charges, which have turned negative across all electricity supply companies (escoms).

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) approved the -37 paise FPPCA charges based on variations in fuel and power purchase costs in November for all Bescom consumer categories.

For those using 100 units, the reduction could amount to up to Rs.3.7 on their bills. The reduction in FPPCA is linked to a discrepancy of Rs.150 crore found between the KERC-approved power purchase cost and the actual cost from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL).

The decrease in coal procurement costs, particularly due to international market trends, played a significant role in the negative FPPCA in November. The possibility of a continued decrease in the coming months remains uncertain, as FPPCA is influenced by market dynamics.
