e-Challan – How Does e-Challan Work

Electronic challans or e-challans, a recently developed technology, is used by traffic cops to issue challans in India when someone violates traffic rules. The traffic police use a swiping machine to generate e-challans which also simultaneously generate entry on the police server.

The technology of e-challans was introduced to maintain transparency. When the e-challans are generated, there is a digital copy of the traffic rule violation that neither the cop nor the citizen can get away with a bribe.

The e-challan is directly sent to the citizen’s email ID or mobile number, where they need to pay the fine within 60 days from the date of its issuance.

Benefits of e Challan

The main benefits of the e-challan are mentioned below:

  1. Citizens can make the payment anywhere and at any given time.
  2. Transparency is enhanced.
  3. Revenue loss will be minimised.
  4. In the case of pending challans, any transactions regarding the vehicle will be blocked.
  5. Central monitoring can be done so that the Road Safety Policy is implemented.
  6. Helps individuals save time since the penalty must be paid online.
  7. No fake or duplicate challans.

Traffic Violations that Will Get You an e Challan

The traffic police officers may issue an e-challan for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Traffic rule violations
  2. Jumping red lights
  1. Refusal to provide details when requested
  2. Driving vehicle without license
  3. Driving unauthorised vehicle
  4. Causing obstruction of traffic
  5. Driving without a valid insurance policy

How does e Challan Work?

CCTV cameras have been installed to record and monitor footage of the constant traffic conditions. If you are found guilty of breaking a traffic law, the traffic police will review the CCTV footage of the incident and record it in their logs. They will also request your name, complete address, contact information, and vehicle information from the RTO office.

You will receive a text message informing you of the error made and the cost that must be paid. Swiping devices are provided to traffic police so they can rapidly create and print vehicle e challans for traffic violations. Due to the fact that the fine is typically collected right away, this electronic challan system significantly streamlines the payment procedure. A receipt is subsequently given to the defaulter as proof that the money was received.
