RFID or Radio Frequency Identification Tag is an ID system meant for the purpose of identification and tracking through the use of small radio frequency identification devices. Information is stored electronically within the tag.
An RFID tagging system comprises:
The different types of RFID tags that are available are mentioned below:
Active Tags - They have their own power source. Hence, they have a larger memory capacity and can read at great ranges.
Passive Tags - Don't have their own power source. They are activated briefly by the RF (radio frequency) scan of the RFID reader. Due to the small electric current, passive tags usually just transmit an ID number.
RFID tagging is an alternative option for the barcode system. The former is more expensive but comes with added benefits such as RFID tags don't fall off, get dirty, or the fact that they do not need an unobstructed line of sight between the reader and the tag.
FASTag eliminates the need to stop and pay cash at toll plazas by automatically deducting the toll amount from a reloadable tag affixed on a vehicle's windscreen. This reloadable tag uses RFID technology for such transactions once the tag account is activated.
With FASTag, you no longer need to stop at toll plazas and pay cash. This cashless payment of toll fees is currently operational at over 180 toll plazas nationwide. More will be brought under this programme in the future.
The FASTag programme is being implemented by IHMCL (Indian Highways Management Company Limited) and NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India) along with FASTag Issuer Agencies, Toll Plaza Concessionaires, and Toll Transaction Acquirers.
Some of the main sectors where RFID is used are mentioned below:
For the application of a FASTag, you will be required to submit the following documents:
You can buy a FASTag at PoS terminals at toll plazas, from outlets or online portals of NRTC member banks, distribution agents, sales officers, or the official NHAI website.
Major banks issue FASTags, including Axis Bank, HDFC, YES Bank, Kotak, PNB, Canara, Union Bank, South Indian Bank, etc. For the updated list, visit the NPCI website at www.npci.org.in.
Currently, FASTag is accepted at more than 650 toll plazas. At non-FASTag plazas, tolls must be paid manually. Check the full list on the IHMCL or NHAI websites.
In case your FASTag has been damaged, you can get in touch with the issuing authority of the tag and apply for a replacement of the same.
You can use your FASTag at all the FASTag-enabled plazas all over India. If there is a change of address, you must notify your FASTag issuing bank about the same.
Your FASTag is valid for five years.
No, you use only one FASTag for a vehicle.
If your vehicle is lost, you must contact your FASTag issuing bank to block your FASTag account.
If your FASTag is not accepted at a toll plaza, you should register a complaint by calling 1033 (toll-free number).
According to the MorTH guidelines, the charges for a FASTag are Rs.100.
