What is a Duplicate Registration Certificate (RC)?

A duplicate RC refers to a replicated version of the original Registration Certificate (RC) issued to the owner of a particular vehicle registered with a Regional Transport Office (RTO). When reapplying, you have the option to receive either a duplicate RC book or a smart card.

How to Apply for a Duplicate RC Online?

Applying for a duplicate RC online involves the following steps: 

Step 1: Visit the official Parivahan Sewa portal and choose your state along with the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) office. 

Step 2: Enter your vehicle’s registration number and click on ‘Proceed.' The screen will then display all the relevant details of your vehicle. Please review these details carefully to ensure accuracy. 

Step 3: On the following screen, select ‘Duplicate Registration Certificate’ from the list of available service options. 

Step 4: Enter the last 5 digits of your vehicle's chassis number and click the corresponding button. 

Step 5: Complete the form with all the required details and upload the necessary documents. Once you've filled in the information, click on ‘Submit.’ 

Step 6: After submitting the application, make the required payment, and then click on ‘Print Out’ to obtain the acknowledgement and application form. 

Step 7: The next step involves submitting this form, along with all the necessary documents, to your nearest RTO office. Additionally, you will need to schedule an appointment for the verification of your vehicle.

How to Apply for a Duplicate RC Offline?

To apply for a duplicate RC through offline channels, follow these steps: 

Step 1: Visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO) where your original RC was initially issued. 

Step 2: Obtain Form No. 26A, which is the designated form for applying for a duplicate RC. 

Step 3: Complete the form by providing all the required information and ensure that you attach all the necessary documents as specified by the RTO. 

Step 4: Submit the duly filled application form, along with the required documents and fees, to the RTO office. 

Step 5: Upon submission, the RTO authorities will provide you with a date for the verification of your vehicle and chassis number.

Required Documents 

To apply for a Duplicate RC book, individuals must provide the following documents, whether applying online or through offline channels: 

• Police certificate or copy of lodging complaints: This document establishes the loss or theft of the original RC and is typically the most critical requirement. 
• Affidavit copy confirming loss: The affidavit serves as a legal statement affirming the loss of the original RC. 
• Filled-up Form 26: This is the official application form for obtaining a duplicate RC, and it is essential for processing your request. 
• Valid insurance certificate: This proves that the vehicle is adequately insured, a crucial requirement for legal compliance. 
• Pollution certificate: Demonstrating compliance with environmental standards is important, although not as critical as the documents mentioned above. 
• Address proof of the vehicle's owner: This document establishes the owner's identity and residence, which is important for verification. 
• Identity documents of the vehicle's owner: PAN card, Form 60, or Form 61 serve as additional identity verification documents for the owner. 
• Signature identification of the owner: This helps verify the owner's identity, although it may not be as vital as the documents above. 
• Printed copy of engine pencil and engine chassis: These details are necessary for vehicle identification but are of slightly lower priority than the preceding documents. 
• Additional documents for commercial vehicles: Tax clearance certificate and clearance challan from the Enforcement Traffic Wing, if applicable, are specific to commercial vehicle owners and should be provided as needed.

Processing time

The processing time required to obtain a Duplicate RC typically falls within a range of 15 to 30 days from the date of submission. After processing, the option to download the duplicate RC is also available. 

Processing Fee

Here is the fee structure for obtaining a Duplicate RC according to the Motor Vehicle Act, as per rule no. 53(2): 

• Invalid Carriage: Rs.25 
• Motorcycle: Rs.150 
• Non-transport light motor vehicle: Rs.300 
• Transport light motor vehicle: Rs.500 
• Medium goods vehicle: Rs.500 
• Medium passenger motor vehicle: Rs.500 
• Heavy goods vehicle: Rs.750 
• Heavy passenger vehicle: Rs.750 
• Imported motor vehicle: Rs.2500 
• Imported motorcycle: Rs.1250 
• Other types of vehicles: Rs.1500

How to Check Duplicate Registration Certificate (RC) status?

Follow the steps described below to check the status of your Duplicate Registration Certificate (RC): 

Step 1: Visit the Parivahan Sewa services portal. 

Step 2: Look for the ‘RCDL’ (Registration Certificate of Duplicate License) section, typically under the ‘RC Related Services’ or a similar category. 

Step 3: Enter your vehicle's registration number in the provided field.  

Step 4: Click on the ‘Check Status’ or a similar button. The portal will then display the current status of your duplicate RC application.

A RC smart card contains the information which can be listed as follows:

2. The registration number
3. The chassis number
4. The colour and type of the vehicle
5. The seating capacity of the vehicle
