Documents Required for Aadhaar Card

An Aadhaar card serves as an address proof and identity proof when applying for various financial instruments such as credit cards, loans, fixed deposits, savings accounts, etc.

You need to submit certain documents when applying for an Aadhaar card. Documents will also be required if you are already enrolled for Aadhaar but need to make certain changes to your existing details.

  • Identity proof documents (should contain your name and photo).
  • Address proof documents (should contain your name and address).
  • Date of birth documents.
  • Proof of relationship documents (should contain information about the head of the family).

You will be required to produce the original copies of the documents you wish to submit. These documents will be scanned and returned. There is no need to print and submit photocopies.

Proof of Identity (POI) Documents - Comprising Name and Photograph

Any of the following documents will be accepted as an ID proof document:

  • PAN card
  • Passport
  • Voter ID
  • PDS Photo Card/Ration Card
  • Driving Licence.
  • PSU-issued Service Photo ID Card/Government-issued Photo ID Card.
  • Photo ID Card issued by a recognised institute of education.
  • NREGS Job Card.
  • Arms Licence.
  • Photo Credit Card.
  • Photo Bank ATM Card.

  • Certificate from the head of a recognised educational institution/warden/superintendent/matron.
  • RSBY Card.
  • Gazette notification in case of name change.
  • SC/ST/OBC Certificate comprising a photograph.
  • SSLC book comprising a photograph.
  • Marriage Certificate comprising a photograph.
  • For rural areas - A Certificate of Identity comprising a photograph issued by the mukhiya or village panchayat head.

Proof of Date of Birth (DOB) Documents for Aadhaar Card

You can submit any of the following documents to ascertain your date of birth:

  • Birth Certificate.
  • Passport.
  • SSLC Certificate/Book.
  • PAN Card.
  • A DOB Certificate on letterhead issued by a Group A Gazetted Officer.
  • Marksheet issued by any University or Government Board.
  • Government or PSU issued Photo ID Card containing date of birth.
  • State/Central Pension Payment Order.
  • Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme Photo Card or Central Government Health Scheme Photo Card.
  • I-Card/Certificate comprising a DOB and photograph signed and issued by a Government authority.
  • Photo ID Card comprising a DOB issued by a recognised educational institution.

Proof of Relationship (POR) Documents - Comprising Details with Head of Family if Required

You can submit any of the following details to verify your proof of relationship. Please note that the document(s) you furnish may need to contain relationship details with the head of your family:

  • Passport.
  • PDS Card.
  • State Government/ECHS/ ESIC/CGHS Medical Card.
  • Army Canteen Card.
  • Pension Card.
  • MNREGA Job Card.
  • Birth Certificate issued by Municipal Corporation, Registrar of Birth, or any other notified local body of the Government such as Tehsil, Taluk, etc.
  • Family entitlement document issued by a State or the Central Government.
  • Government-issued Marriage Certificate.
  • Bhamashah Card.
  • Department of Posts issued Address Card comprising a name and a photograph.
  • Discharge slip/card issued by a government hospital in case of birth of a child.
  • Certificate of Identity comprising a photograph issued by an MLA/MLC/MP/Gazetted Officer/Municipal Councilor on a letterhead.
  • For rural areas - A Certificate of Identity comprising a photograph and relationship with the head of the family issued by the mukhiya or village panchayat.

Documents Required for Children’s Aadhaar Card

The documentation needed to issue Aadhaar cards to children is the same as those necessary for normal applicants. Besides documents required for normal applicants, one of the parents must produce their Aadhaar card. Children under the age of five years are exempt from providing biometric information.

Once children reach the age of five years, their biometric data is collected.

The documents needed for an Aadhaar card for a child over the age of five years are as follows:

  • Identity proof
  • Address proof
  • A parent’s Aadhaar card
  • Birth certificate

The following documents are acceptable as address proof:

  1. Spouse’s passport
  2. Voter ID
  3. Credit card statement for last three months
  4. Electricity bill for last three months

Required Documents for Long-Term Visa Holders, OCI Cardholders, and Other Resident Foreigners in Nepal, Bhutan, and India

Listed below are the required documents for Aadhaar card applications for OCI cardholders, LTV document holders, Nepal and Bhutan nationals, and other resident foreigners:

For OCI Cardholders

A valid OCI card.

A valid foreign passport. Residents who have resided in India for a minimum of 182 days in the last year can use this as ID proof.

For Long Term Visa (LTV) Document Holders

A valid Long Term Visa (LTV) document.

A valid or expired foreign passport from the original country of issuance for minority communities of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, including Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, and Christians.

For Nepal and Bhutan Nationals:

Passport of Nepal or Bhutan for nationals of Nepal or Bhutan.

If a passport is not available, any two of the following documents with the same address can be submitted:

Nepalese or Bhutanese Citizenship Certificate.

Voter identity card issued by the Election Commission of Bhutan or Nepal.

Limited validity photo identity certificate issued by the Nepalese Mission or Royal Bhutanese Mission in India.

For other Resident Foreigners:

A valid VISA.

A valid foreign passport. Residents who have stayed in India for a minimum of 182 days in the past year can use this as identity proof.

A valid registration certificate or residential permit issued by the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) for resident foreigners (excluding OCI card holders, LTV document holders, and Nepal or Bhutan nationals). This document can be used as an address proof.
