When the government launched the Sukanya Samriddhi scheme, it gave authority to the post offices in India and several banks to handle the account and make the provision for opening the accounts. Not many banks were willing to open the account in their banks initially.

But, Punjab National Bank (PNB) has now officially started opening these accounts at 1604 of its branches all over India. Though the bank has not provided the list of these 1604 branches which have started serving for this scheme, it has provided a centralised customer care number calling which you can get the address of the branch nearest to your place.

Features of Sukanya Samriddhi in Punjab National Bank

  1. It is a scheme for girl child below the age of 10 years
  2. The guardian or the parent can open the account under the name of the girl child
  3. Only one account is allowed for every girl child
  4. Deposits can be made to the account till 14 years from the date of the opening of the account
  5. The minimum amount to be deposited is Rs.250 every year

  • How many SSY accounts can one beneficiary open?

    A beneficiary can open a single account with either the post office or a bank. 

  • What happens if a person deposits the surplus amount into their PNB SSY account?

    Even if a deposit over 1.5 lakhs in any fiscal year is approved due to an accounting error, it will not be eligible for further interest. The depositor may withdraw the amount put more than the annual ceiling of 1.5 lakhs at any time. 

  • Does the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account allow for premature closure?

    Yes, the Sukanya Samridhhi Yojana account at PNB allows for the premature closure of SSY accounts. The causes could include a chronic sickness or the premature death of the principal account holder, among others. 

  • Can I get a loan through SSY?

    No, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana does not give lending facilities. 

  • What happens if the recipient, a girl kid, dies suddenly?

    In the event of a girl child's death, the Sukanya Samriddhi Account is ended and closed, with the proceeds handed to the girl child's guardians or parents.
