All citizens above the age of 18 have the right to vote in India based on the 'one person, one vote' principle. But, some voters try to cheat the system by obtaining multiple voter IDs under their name. To tackle this issue, the government has introduced the process of linking voter ID cards (EPIC) with Aadhaar.
Aadhaar is a unique combination of numbers assigned to a particular person for their identification. It holds a person's biometric data, such as fingerprints and iris scans. Since a person can have only one Aadhaar, linking it with EPIC helps eliminate duplicate or fraudulent voter ID registrations.
Linking your Voter ID with your Aadhaar card offers several benefits:
Enhanced Accuracy: Ensures proper identity verification and helps maintain accurate voter records, preventing registration errors in electoral constituencies.
Convenience: Allows easy updates to voter registration details through the National Voter's Service Portal (NVSP) without the need for physical visits.
Better Security: Reduces the risk of electoral fraud and identity theft, as Aadhaar authentication is based on biometric data like fingerprints and iris scans.
Simplified Access to Services: Aadhaar is widely accepted as proof of identity and residence, making it easier to avail of government services and benefits.
While linking Aadhaar with Voter ID is optional, those opting to do so must provide both their Voter ID and Aadhaar numbers. The process can be completed online via NVSP or at the local electoral office.
The Aadhaar- EPIC (also known as Voter ID) linking process is known as seeding and is carried out through the NVSP portal. The steps to seed Aadhaar with Voter ID can be done through multiple channels.
Follow the steps mentioned below to link Aadhaar card and voter ID:
Step 1- Visit the official NVSP website run by the Government of India and enter your state, district, and personal details such as name, date of birth, and father's name.
Step 2- Once you have filled in the details, click on the 'Search' button. Your details will be displayed on the screen if the information you entered matches the government database information.
Step 3- On the left-hand side of the screen, a 'Feed Aadhaar No' option will be visible.
Step 4- Click on it, whereupon a pop-up window will appear where you will have to feed in your name as per your Aadhaar card, your EPIC number, Aadhaar number, and your registered mobile number/registered email address.
Step 5- After correctly entering the information, click 'submit'.
Step 6- A notification will appear on the screen informing you that your application to link Aadhaar and EPIC was registered successfully.
