The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) introduced Aadhaar Virtual ID to address various issues such as reduction in data breach, improved security, to control unauthorized transactions, etc. The virtual ID offered by UIDAI allows limited KYC access. This way user gets access to limited information and the complete details of Aadhaar card are not exposed.
The Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID) is a temporary, 16-digit, revocable code that is mapped to an individual's Aadhaar number. This feature introduced by UIDAI allows Aadhaar holders to authenticate their identity without disclosing their actual Aadhaar number and other important details like the mobile number, bank account, and other financial documents.
The user can generate only one virtual ID against an Aadhaar number at a single point in time. However, this number can be generated as many times as the user wants. This code is revocable, is valid for at least one day, and can be changed with the change of date, i.e. at 00:00 am.
The Aadhaar Virtual ID provides access to an Aadhaar card holder's biometric information as well as the basic information needed for e-KYC, such as name, address, and photograph. The agency would not have access to the 12-digit Aadhaar number and other personal details.
The features and benefits of Aadhaar VID are as listed below:
