Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana

The Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana is a conditional cash transfer scheme introduced by the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal (DWD&SW).

Its objective is to improve the overall well-being and status of girl children in West Bengal through education and delaying their marriages until they attain the age of 18 years. The Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana is sponsored by the government of West Bengal and is implemented in all of the state's districts.

Objectives of Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana

The Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana has been implemented to deliver the following objectives:

  1. Rejecting the concept of child marriage and making sure that every family complies with the law concerning the legal age for marriage.
  2. Increase the median age of the first birth while postponing the age of marriage to increase the infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR).
  3. Eliminate the malnutrition and undernutrition of girl children.
  4. Encourage the continuation of girls' education in secondary and higher secondary classes, as well as those pursuing vocational training or athletic training, through scholarships.
  1. Lower the number of dropouts, particularly among girls coming from low-income families.
  2. Prevent the exploitation and trafficking of young girls.
  3. The scheme should not only provide adolescent girls with financial assistance but also serve as a tool for financial inclusion. Benefits from the scheme are thereby paid directly into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, giving them the ability to decide how to spend the money.
  4. The communication strategy involves adolescent-friendly methods such as Kanyashree clubs, events, competitions, and the support of powerful women figures as role models that advocate social and psychological empowerment.

Components of Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana
