Indian Government introduced Balika Samridhi Yojana (BSY) in 1997 under the Department of Women and Child Development. This scheme takes the initiative to support the birth of girl children and promotes education.

The following is the overview of the Balik Samridhi Yojana scheme: 

  1. There is no last date for applying for this scheme 
  2. The minimum assistant amount after child’s birth is Rs.500 and maximum scholarship of Rs.1000 annually 
  3. Applicants can apply offline through health functionaries or Anganwadi workers 
  1. Female children born in family with BPL ration card are applicable for the scheme 

Benefits of Balika Samridhi Yojana 

To avail the Balika Samridhi Yojana, a family should have only two female children born on or after 15 August 1997.

Here are the benefits of Balika Samridhi Yojana scheme: 

  1. After birth of girl child, a sum of Rs.500 will be paid 
  2. School-going children are entitled to annual scholarship after successful completion of every academic year: 

Class 1 to 3: Rs.300 

Class 4: Rs.500 

Class 5: Rs.600 

Class 6 and 7: Rs.700 

Class 8: Rs.800 

Class 9 and 10: Rs.1000 

Eligibility for Balika Samridhi Yojana 

The following are the eligibility criteria for applying for Balika Samridhi Yojana scheme: 

  1. As per the criteria mentioned by Swarna Jayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana, girl should be born in a rural family under the poverty line 
  2. Girl child born on or after 15 August 1997 are eligible for the scheme 
  1. Only two girl children in a family are eligible for the scheme, irrespective of the number of girl child in that family 
  2. Girl child born to an urban family residing in slum area is also eligible for the scheme 
  3. Girl child of rag-pickers, payment vendor, and vegetable and fruit sellers are also eligible for the scheme benefits 
  4. Girl child of BPL (Below Poverty Line) cardholders are eligible for the scheme as the Government of India 

Application Procedure of Balika Samridhi Yojana 

Balika Samriddhi Yojana is implemented in urban areas through Health Department, while in rural areas by the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services).

The following is the application procedure for applying for Balika Samridhi Yojana scheme: 

  1. Collect the form from the concerned authority of either the urban or rural area 
  2. Application can also be downloaded from the official website of BSY 
  3. Fill in the details as mentioned in the application form 
  4. Submit the form from where it was obtained

  1. The amount deposit will be made into an interest-bearing account opened in favour of the girl child beneficiary. 
  1. Ensure that the deposited amount earns the highest possible interest. 
  1. Encourage the beneficiary girl child to explore savings options such as NSC or PPF. 
  1. Consider utilising a portion of the post-birth grant and educational scholarship to pay the premium on an insurance policy under the Bhagyashri Balika Kalyan Bima Yojana. The remaining amount can be used to purchase uniforms, textbooks, and other essentials, with the remainder deposited into the beneficiary account. 
  1. Upon the girl child reaching 18 years of age and obtaining the necessary certificate from the Municipality or Gram Panchayat confirming unmarried status, authorise the post office or bank to enable the withdrawal of funds from the interest-bearing account. 
  1. If the girl child marries before turning 18, she will forfeit the annual scholarship amount and accrued interest, receiving only the post-birth grant of Rs. 500 along with the accrued interest. 
  1. In the unfortunate event of the girl child's demise before reaching 18 years of age, the entire accumulated amount will be withdrawn.
