Over 47 lakh Senior Citizens Enrolled in the Ayushman Bharat Scheme

Since the announcement last year, more than 47 lakh senior citizens above 70 years have enrolled for the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Within three months, 1.10 lakh hospital admissions have been recorded for this age group, with claims worth Rs. 202.96 crore raised. The AB-PMJAY offers free treatment benefits of up to Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of their socioeconomic status, through the Ayushman Vay Vandana card. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, over 47.2 lakh Ayushman Vay Vandana cards have been issued as of 6 February 2025.

Madhya Pradesh leads with 13.57 lakh cards, followed by Uttar Pradesh (8 lakh), Kerala (6.07 lakh), and Rajasthan (over 2 lakh). Aadhaar-based e-KYC is mandatory for enrollment, and beneficiaries with other central and state government health insurance schemes can opt for Ayushman Bharat. Private health insurance holders and Employee State Insurance Scheme members are also eligible. The scheme's inclusion of senior citizens was driven by the higher likelihood of hospitalisation among those above 70 and the limited availability and high cost of private health insurance for this age group. The initiative is expected to particularly benefit elderly women, as over half of those aged 70 and above are women, with 54% being widows.

IRDAI caps Senior Citizen health insurance premium hikes at 10% in a year

On 30 January 2025, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) instructed insurance companies to limit premium increases for senior citizen health policies to a maximum of 10% per year.

The regulator noticed a sharp rise in premiums for health plans covering individuals aged 60 and above. To prevent excessive hikes, non-life and health insurers have been directed to keep annual premium increases within the 10% limit.
