Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) which was launched by the ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas was launched with the aim of providing LPG connections to BPL households.

Under the scheme, you are eligible to receive Rs.1600 for each connection, interest free loan to purchase a gas stove and refill of the cylinder. The government will bear the administrative cost of the LPG connection.

Union Budget highlights

Around 1 crore new beneficiaries to be covered under the Ujjwala Scheme - According to the Finance Minister, around 1 crore new beneficiaries will be provided cover under the Ujjwala scheme. Under the scheme, 100 districts will be added over the next 3 years for the purposes of city gas distribution. Around 8 crore households have benefited from the LPG scheme so far.  

Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Scheme

PMUY Beneficiaries

A woman who belongs to a BPL family and does not have LPG connection in her household can avail the benefit of PMUY scheme. However, she must be included in the SECC 2011 list or under the seven identified categories namely People residing in river islands, SC/ST households, Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes, PMAY (Gramin), Forest dwellers, AAY, and Most Backward Classes (MBC).

Eligibility Criteria

In order to avail the benefit of PMUY, you need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Should be an Indian citizen
  2. Should be above 18 years of age
  3. Should be a woman from a BPL family who doesn't have LPG connection
  4. Should not be availing any benefit under other similar schemes
  5. Beneficiaries should be included in the list of SECC 2011 or BPL households under SC/ST households, PMAY (Gramin), AAY, Most Backward Classes (MBC), forest dwellers, people residing in river islands or Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes.

Documents Required

The documents which needs to be submitted are listed below:

  1. BPL certificate issued by the municipality chairman or panchayat pradhan
  2. Caste certificate
  3. One passport-sized photograph
  4. Photo identity proof
  5. Address proof
  6. BPL ration card
  7. Aadhaar numbers of all the members of the family
  8. Bank passbook or details of Jan Dhan bank account
  9. Duly signed 14-point declaration in the prescribed format

The registration process for availing benefit under the PMUY scheme is mentioned below. Read on to know about the step-wise process:

Step 1 - Collect the application form from the nearest LPG distributor or download it from www.pmuy.gov.in

Step 2 - Fill up the form

Step 3 - Submit the form at the LPG distributor office

Step 4 - Once the application is submitted, it will be processed. An LPG connection will be issued by various oil marketing companies once documents are verified and eligibility is checked.

PMUY Scheme: Latest Event

On 28 May 2018, PM Modi interacted with PMUY beneficiaries through video conferencing. In the meeting between Modi and the beneficiaries, various topics regarding PMUY were discussed. He also spoke about to how the PMUY scheme has benefited the underprivileged, the Dalits and the tribal communities. The PM also talked about how the women of the households have been empowered by this scheme. The scheme also prevents the health hazards normally the members of the household would face when cooking food on firewood instead of LPG.

Modi also informed the beneficiaries about LPG panchayats that are being held across the country. In these LPG panchayats that are held in the most inaccessible rural areas, important information about the PMUY scheme as well as safety tips on how to use LPG are provided to the people. Talking about the benefits of the scheme, Modi said that the women now need less time to cook food than earlier which allows them to spend more time with their family. The PM ended the video conferencing session by saying that PMUY has benefited the lives of people in more than one way.

Budget and Funding for the Scheme

This scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The budget that has been allotted by the government is currently Rs.2000 crore for the financial year 2016 to 2017. These LPG connections will be provided to over 1.5 crore families living below poverty line.

This scheme will be implemented over a period of three years and a total amount of Rs.8,000 crores has been allotted for it. Money that has been saved due to the 'Give-it-up' subsidy campaign will also be used for the same. Eligible households will receive a support of Rs.1,600 and will be in the name of the female head of the entire household. EMI facilities have also been made available.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. No other LPG connections from another OMC must be present in the house.
  2. The applicant must be a woman who is at least 18 years of age.
  3. Adult women who belong to the below-mentioned categories can apply:

    2. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin)
    3. Most Backward Classes (MBC)
    4. Antyodaya Anna Yojana
    5. Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes
    6. Forest Dwellers
    7. Individuals that live in river islands and islands

Documents Required

The documents that must be submitted in order to apply for a connection under the scheme are mentioned below:

  1. In order to support the status of the family, supplementary KYC must be submitted.
  2. The bank account number along with the IFSC code.
  3. Aadhaar Card of the beneficiary as well as the adult family members.
  4. Ration Card
  5. Aadhaar Card as proof of identity and address.
  6. KYC documents.

The 'Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayat' is an event in which meeting between the Prime Minister and the beneficiaries of the PMUY scheme takes place so that the beneficiaries can raise their concerns, if they have any regarding the services of the scheme. As per a statement released by the government, these meetings serve the purpose of establishing a deeper connect between the government and the beneficiaries.

    A total cost of up to Rs.1,600 will be paid by the Government of India. The government will reimburse this amount per connection to the respective Oil Marketing Company. In return, the Oil Marketing Companies reimburse Suraksha Hose Pipe cost, DGCC book, installation charges, and administrative of about Rs.200 to the respective distributor on a weekly basis.

  • My mother applied for the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Her name is appearing as the applicant on the application. She is not alive, can I or her granddaughter claim the benefit and get the Uiiwala connection?

    Yes. They are eligible to receive on behalf of the deceased applicant provided they fulfil certain prescribed conditions.
