The letters and numbers used in a vehicle registration number indicate certain details of the vehicle. The two initial letters in the registration number represent the Indian state in which the vehicle is registered.

For Example:-MH for Maharashtra, KA for Karnataka, DL for Delhi, AP for Andhra Pradesh, and others. The next two numbers after the state code represent the code for a particular RTO that functions under the state government. The next 4 numbers on your registration plate are the registration number of your two-wheeler. The vehicle number can be anything in the band of 0001 to 9999. Once all the registration numbers in the range are allocated, an extra alphabet is attached to the number, and the same series of numbers is used again.

The state transport authorities usually keep certain numbers from the range of 0001 to 9999 as reserved numbers that cannot be availed through the usual vehicle registration process. In the regular two-wheeler registration process, a number is generated through a computerized system and the vehicle owner does not have a say in it.

All VIP registration numbers are blocked in the system and the applicant must apply for a special number through a specific process as applicable in the respective state. How to Get a Two-Wheeler Fancy Number in India?

The steps to get a fancy registration number for your two-wheeler are mentioned below:

Step 1 - To begin, you must register as a public user on the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) website.

Step 2  - Once you sign up, you must select a fancy vehicle number of your choice.

Step 3 - To book the desired fancy number, you have to pay a fee for the account registration.

Step 4 - After paying all necessary fees, you need to officially bid on the number you choose.

Step 5 -  If you win the desired plate in the online auction, you will need to pay the remaining balance. Otherwise, you have to collect your due amount.

Step 6 - In order to use this number, you must print the allotment letter that shows on the screen once payment is received.

Fees and Registration Charges

In most cases, the applicant f a special two-wheeler number has to pay a certain registration fee and deposit the base price for the desired number as caution money. Once the number is assigned to a person, they must pay the remaining amount at the RTO within a specific frame of time. Failing to do the same will result in the cancellation of the application. While the caution money is refundable, the registration charges are not refundable.

The registration fee for a fancy number varies from state to state. In addition to the registration fee, you need to pay an advance fee to book a specific plate. This advance payment is determined by the type of number you choose to reserve. These special numbers are divided into four divisions, each with its own advance payment slab.

Note: The advance payment is not always the final amount you pay. The final payment is determined by what you bid on. The advance payment will be refunded in case you lose to another party.

Two-Wheeler Fancy Number Allotment Process

Based on the respective number allotment process in a particular state, a two-wheeler number will be assigned to the applicant. The applicant will be intimated by the RTO to pay the remaining sum and claim their number. If the applicant fails to pay the amount in a specific time-frame, their application will be cancelled and the number will be put back in the series of available fancy numbers.

Step 1 - Go to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' official website.

Step 2 - Navigate to the ‘Choice Number’ option.

Step 3 - Choose your RTO name and the state where you reside.

Step 4 - A page displaying the available fancy numbers will appear after you provide the above details.

It could take more time to receive a fancy vehicle number than a regular one. As a result, you might need to refrain from using this vehicle until an allotment letter is issued to you.
