A Brief Description of August Holidays

1. Raksha Bandhan: Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that observes the love between a brother and sister. On the day of the festival, a sister ties rakhi on her brother's wrist in the presence of the family. The brother in return promises to take care of his sister and offer special gifts.
2. Jhulan Purnima: It is another important festival for the followers of Lord Krishna. The festival celebrates the Radha-Krishna attachment together with the romantic passion of the rainy season. As part of the festival, idols of both Radha and Krishna are decorated and placed on an ornate swing. People visit temples and swing the deities amidst bhajans and kirtans recited by priests. Special aartis are held in temples on this occasion.
3. Tendong Lho Rum Faat: It is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Sikkim. As part of the three-day festival, prayers are offered to Mount Tendong. People prepare a model of the mountain with nine stones and worship it. To seek blessings, people sing and dance wearing masks. The festival holds special significance for the Lepcha tribe.

1. Independence Day: A national holiday, the day commemorates the country's independence from British rule. While the main celebration takes place at Red Fort in New Delhi, various functions are held in different states of the country. As part of the festival, the national flag is unfurled, patriotic programs are organised, and the freedom fighters who laid down their lives are remembered. The Prime Minister of the country addresses the nation gives an account of the achievements in the previous year and offers an insight into the future plans.
2. Parsi New Year: The day is celebrated to mark the beginning of the Iranian calendar. The day also known as Jamshed-i-Nouraz is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm. On the day, people from the Parsi community beautify their homes and wear new traditional dresses. Fire temples are visited to seek forgiveness for their sins and pray for prosperity. Traditional Parsi delicacies like farcha, meethi sev dahi, dhansak etc. are prepared as part of the festivities.
3. Onam: Onam is a harvest festival celebrated in the state of Kerala. It celebrates the homecoming of King Mahabali a fictional king of Kerala who was known to be generous to his people and according to legends was sent to the underworld after Lord Vamana asked for three feet of land and the king offered himself for the third feet after the God had measured the entirety of universe in his first two feet itself.

1. Patriot Day: A regional Indian public holiday observed in Manipur is Patriot Day which commemorates those people who lost their lives while fighting war against the British Empire in 1891. The festival is celebrated every year on 13 August by the people of northwestern Indian state in remembrance of all those brave patriots.
