What to do if you have lost your two-wheeler insurance documents?

According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, any two-wheeler traveling on Indian highways must have a current two-wheeler insurance coverage.

If you are discovered driving without insurance by traffic police or motor department personnel, you will be fined Rs. 2000 under the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2016. So, if you've misplaced or lost your insurance-related paperwork, take the following actions right away:

  1. File an FIR with the police department in your area.
  2. Send an attested copy of the FIR to your insurance company.
  3. Apply for a duplicate copy of the insurance policy.
  4. Publish an advertisement in the local newspaper if required.
  5. Sign an indemnity bond to indemnify your insurer.

Steps to Apply for a Duplicate Two-Wheeler Insurance

How to Get Duplicate Copy of Bike Insurance

A two-wheeler insurance policy contains the insurance details for the covered vehicle. When making a claim for any loss or damage to your car resulting from an accident or other disaster, this is the main document you must provide. If you don't have your policy documents on hand, you won't be able to submit a claim to your insurance provider. Therefore, the best course of action if you cannot locate the policy documentation is to file for a duplicate insurance policy:

Follow these steps to apply for a copy of your insurance policy documents at the earliest:

Step 1 - File a FIR

Step 2 - Submit a written application to insurer for reissue of insurance certificate

Step 3 -Publish the following in your local newspaper

  1. Name of the policyholder Insurance policy number
  1. Name of the insurance company
  1. Registration number of the two-wheeler

Step 4 - Send an indemnity bond on no-judicial stamp paper to your insurer

File an FIR

You must initially report the loss of the documents as a First Information Report (FIR) to the local police. Visit the local police station that is responsible and let them know you've lost your two-wheeler insurance documents. Mention your policy number, kind (such as comprehensive or third-party liability), and any add-ons or riders in a clear and concise manner.

When you are done reporting, submit an application to get a FIR copy from the police station. Get the copy attested and submit it to your insurance company as a proof that the documents are missing and you have reported the loss. Ensure to attach the FIR application with the FIR copy at the time of submitting the documents to your insurer.

Submit an Application

Requesting a copy of your two-wheeler insurance policy is the next step. Send a written request for duplicate two-wheeler insurance coverage to your insurance provider, explaining why you want it and why you need it. Give all relevant details regarding your insurance, including the name of the policyholder, the policy number, the date it was issued, and the type of coverage, in the application. Include a description of the events leading up to the loss of the insurance policy documentation.

If your insurance policy is held jointly, you will have to sign and submit the application along with the other holder of the policy. You will also be required to submit the FIR copy along with your application to get a copy of your two-wheeler insurance papers.

Publish an Advertisement

In the event of the loss of your two-wheeler insurance paper, you are mandated by law to publish an advertisement in a popular local newspaper stating the loss of the insurance papers. Ensure to mention the following information while publishing the advertisement:

  1. Name of the policyholder
  2. Insurance policy number
  3. Name of the insurance company
  4. Registration number of the two-wheeler

The cost of publishing the advertisement should be entirely borne by you. After the publication of the advertisement you are required to submit the copy of the published advertisement to the insurance company.

Sign an Indemnity Bond

Lastly, you will have to sign an indemnity bond on no-judicial stamp paper and send it to your insurance company. In the bond you need to make a legal and formal request for the issuance of duplicate policy document while declaring that in case of claim made by a third person other than you and your nominee you will indemnify the company. The indemnity bond must contain your full name and other policyholder's name, in case of a joint policy and the policy number.

The bond needs to be affirmed before a notary and has to be signed in the presence of two witnesses, who shouldn't be a part of the policyholder's holder's. To get the indemnity bond you will have to pay fee and the stamp fee. The insurer may also ask you to provide proof of your financial status at the time of signing the bond in order to confirm your capability of compensating if required. Once you have successfully filed the application, the insurance company will investigate and verify the matter. After verification if your application is found to be genuine a duplicate copy of your two-wheeler insurance policy will be issued to you by the insurer.

Quick Steps to Obtain Duplicate Insurance Papers:

  1. Call the Insurance Agent: In case you have applied for your two-wheeler insurance through an insurance agent, call the person and inform about the loss. The insurance agent might have a copy of your insurance papers. If he/she has the paper ask to send a PDF copy in your mail.
  2. Contact the Customer Care Centre: If your insurance company has an email support system, write to the customer support email ID about the loss. Mention your registered mobile number and mail ID. If the company policy of your insurer allows, your insurance policy details will be shared through mail.
  3. Download a Copy: Check whether your insurance company offers online policy renewal or download facility. If it does login to your account and download the policy papers online.

If none of these above-mentioned methods work for you, immediately contact your insurance company and apply for duplicate two-wheeler policy papers. Remember, you might have to pay a nominal fee for the issuance of duplicate policy papers.
